Session 2 of preaching 101 focuses on exegesis. Exegesis can be variously explained as:
- The careful, objective process of drawing the original, intended meaning out of a biblical text rather than reading a modern idea into it
- Studying the original historical, grammatical, and literary context of the ancient text to discover what the author meant to his original audience.
- Rigorously studying the contemporary world, culture, and the specific lives of modern listeners so the unchanging truth lands with real-world relevance
Using the PDF below you can learn to better read and understand the Bible. You will also note from the video, that the initial stage of sermon preparation should be nearly identical to any careful study of God’s word. Sermon preparation doesn’t begin with the sermon ideas, but with a proper understanding of the Scripture text and of its connection to the modern world.
